Optivar eye drops is a brand name for generic drug Azelastine. Azelastine belongs to antihistamine class of drugs. These are antihistamine eye products. It functions by stopping the release of histamine and declines symptoms of allergic reaction of an eye. These eye drops are indicated for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis.
Azelastine functions by competing with histamine for an H1 receptor site on effector cells. It works as an antagonist by causing inhibition of histamine release and other mediators involved in allergic reactions.
The dose recommended is single eye drop instilled into each affected eye two times per day. Before using Optivar eye drops always wash your hands first then pull your lower eyelid to form a pouch and then instill a single drop and close your eyes. Apply pressure at the corner of your eyelid for one to two minutes. Wipe out the excess of medication with tissue paper.
Some side effects you may see with the use of Optivar eye drops are blurred vision, bitter taste, burning, headache, stinging, allergic reaction (rash, itching, hives, difficulty in breathing), and swelling of the face, mouth or lips.
